New Plymouth Architects: Spaces shaped by context

New Plymouth is well known for being a blend of art, nature, and culture. It is rugged, while also being refined. It is urban and rural, bustling and calm, visionary and grounded. In response, New Plymouth architecture is about more than just a building. It is about shaping space that feels grounded in its environment and aligned within its context.

Residential and Commercial Architecture in New Plymouth

The town of New Plymouth was established in 1840 and laid out in central blocks by surveyor Frederic Carrington. Many of our historic buildings and streets remain standing today, including St Mary’s Cathedral and the White Hart hotel. But now, we also have an impressive series of modern building designs, including the Len Lye Gallery and our very own Dawson House and Te Henui Chapel. Browse a few of VOID’s favourite architecture projects below.

Office Architecture New Plymouth – Dawson House

Dawson House is home to the New Plymouth Government Offices, accommodating shared spaces for multiple agencies. The building design needed to balance flexibility, sustainability, and a high-performance work environment. Key details include the modelled concrete and glass facade, central stair core for natural ventilation, and sun shading to reduce solar gain.

Residential Architecture New Plymouth – Cast House

The Cast House is a standout example of contemporary house design. It features a striking dual-gable façade, dark vertical panel cladding, expansive glazing, and strategic proportions. The building’s profile commands attention with intentional lines, bold materials, and a clear connection from indoor to outdoor living.

Commercial Architecture New Plymouth – Eagars Funerals

When Eagars Funerals approached us, it was about far more than just a building. They needed a space to offer safety, comfort, and support for those facing life’s most challenging moments. Our highlights from this space include the building’s relationships with its surrounding environment, using layered landscaping and expansive glazing.

Civic Architecture New Plymouth – Te Henui Chapel

The Te Hēnui Chapel is a multi-use chapel and events venue built for Eagars Funerals, right on the border of the Te Henui Cemetery. The solid walls in the main chapel have a sense of enclosure and focus, while a high timber ceiling floats above a band of windows to symbolise a 360-degree connection to the sky.
